Barcelona Moon Team’s other rovers. News, News (eng)

While the four wheeled rover is the final choice for the Barcelona Moon Team rover, Galactic Suite Surface Operations along with the National Institute for Aerospace Technology have gone a long way analyzing and testing other mechanical options. We started with a 6 wheeled rover and progressively reduced its number of wheels to reduce the complexity and minimize the number of motors. Our lander design and the capacity at LTI of the LM2-CTS2 left about 14kg for our rover (beside the commercial extra payload).

One of the designs that was tested is a three wheeled rover such as the one displayed in the video. In this model, the engines and reduction wheels would be internal but attached to the body of the vehicle to facilitate its refrigeration by radiation. Larger lateral wheels are required to overpass 20cm obstacles, while the rear one has no traction and is attached to the main body through a free articulation.

The team also explored the position of the solar panels, the main one being horizontal but with the possibility of inclined panels on top of the wheels both to protect the main panel from dust and to maximize the sun collection by the panels.
